Sadie Frost is to return to the stage for the first time in more than 20 years to play a woman obsessed with pop star Madonna. The play, entitled Touched… For The Very First Time, runs at Trafalgar Studio 2 from 4 February to 14 March.
Written by Zoe Lewis and directed by Douglas Rintoul, Touched… For The Very First Time is billed as a contemporary, high energy, comedic, one woman play centring on Lesley, a 36-year-old from Manchester. She narrates her life from that earth-shattering moment as a plump 14-year-old in 1984, when she hears Madonna’s hit Like A Virgin for the very first time. Convinced that her desire to have it all is inextricably linked with Madonna’s own life, the love affair of a lifetime begins.
Frost last appeared on stage in Mumbo Jumbo at Manchester’s Royal Exchange in 1984, a production that also starred Michael Grandage, the now Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, and was directed by Nicholas Hytner, who now leads the National Theatre.
Since then Frost has appeared intermittently on the big screen – in films including Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Shopping, Bent and An Ideal Husband – in between bringing up four children from high profile marriages to Gary Kemp and Jude Law.
Touched… For The Very First Time promises to include a soundtrack of classic songs from the 1980s and 90s, including, no doubt, a number of Madonna’s many hits.
The Queen of Pop herself is in no way involved in Lewis’s play.
