So you know all about the new musicals coming to London next year. What about those plays and comedies? From plays starring A-list celebs to improvised comedies, TV shows come to life to critically acclaimed transfers, there’s something to tickle every fancy in 2019.
So without further ado, here are nine shows we’re especially excited about in 2019.
Showstopper!
Is it a comedy? Is it a musical? Is it two hours of creative mayhem? It’s all of the above. In Showstopper!, the audience makes the decisions and the people on the stage create a masterpiece. Each night, a brand new hilarious show is created from scratch meaning that no two performances are the same. Yes, there will be music. Yes, its tag-line is The Improvised Musical. But, you’ll definitely walk away remembering the jokes.

Home, I’m Darling
Following a hit run at the National Theatre and the Emlyn Williams Theatre at Theatr Clwyd, where it was nominated for the UK Theatre Award for Best New Play, Home, I’m Darling is a surprising comedy about one woman’s quest to be the perfect 1950s housewife. Laura Wade’s celebrated show investigates the truth behind the gingham curtain of a seemingly happy marriage.

Pinter Seven
Bringing the epic Pinter At The Pinter season to a triumphant end is Pinter Seven. Starring TV bad boys Danny Dyer and Martin Freeman, the final instalment is set to bring a whole new dynamic to the West End. The show will consist of two short plays – A Slight Ache and The Dumb Waiter – both unmissable comedies that explore the political machinations of the powerful and the powerless.

The American Clock
From one of the greatest English playwrights to one of the American greats, The American Clock kicks off an Arthur Miller double bill at The Old Vic. The play which explores the effect of the great depression on American society… even the rich. It stars Giles Terera, Clare Burt, John Marquez and Golda Rosheuvel.

All My Sons
The second half of the double bill is All My Sons starring legendary Hollywood stars Sally Fields and Bill Pulman. The play that explores the truth behind the American dream and what it really takes to be a success will also star Jenna Coleman and Colin Morgan.

The Price
2019 seems to be the year of Arthur Miller as his familial drama The Price is transferring to the West End. A runaway success during its run at the Theatre Royal Bath, this production stars David Suchet and Brendan Coyle who are reprising their roles. The Price tells the story of two brothers who have long gone their separate ways only to be reunited when they are called to sell their family furniture. While sifting through the memories, the brothers realise the true price they’ve paid over generations.

The Twilight Zone
Bringing TV oddities to life, The Twilight Zone will take you on a wondrous journey to the land of imagination. Based on the original CBS show, it promises to be a whirling paranormal kaleidoscope through the unknown. This stint at Ambassadors Theatre follows a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre so don’t let this opportunity to visit The Twilight Zone pass you by.

Betrayal
Following the Pinter At The Pinter season is Betrayal which has even more star power if that’s possible. Starring Tom Hiddleston, this Harold Pinter piece charts a compelling seven-year romance, thrillingly captured in reverse chronological order.

Emilia
Telling the story of the first professional female poet, Emilia Bassano, this electrifying new play tells the story of ‘The Dark Lady’ of Shakespeare’s sonnets for the first time. Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s play initially had a short 11-performance run at Shakespeare’s Globe but due to popular demand, Emilia is transferring to the West End for 14 weeks.
